Bitter leaf is a green vegetable that grows in most soils. In Nigeria, it is known as chusa-doki shawaka by the Hausas, onugbu by the Igbos and ewuro by the Yorubas. The leaf has a sharp bitter taste, but its bitterness is what contributes to the numerous health benefits that one can garner from it. It fights against:
1. Malaria and feverish conditions
2. Indigestion
3. Scurvy
4. Diabetes
5. Kidney and liver problems
6. Rheumatism
7. Bacteria and parasites
8. Piles
9. Worms
10. Mild stomach ailments
One can extract the juice by plucking the leaves, rinsing them and scrubbing them repeatedly to get the juice which is usually dark green in colour. Sieve the water and drink the juice.
