New policy in Nigeria: Report financial crime and earn 5% of the recovered sum

The new policy put in place by the Nigerian Federal Government is one whereby anyone who reports a financial crime or any other scandal will earn 5% of the recovered sum. This new policy was approved on Wednesday, 21st December, 2016 at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari inside the council chamber of the Aso Rock Villa.

The finance minister, Kemi Adeosun revealed the policy after the meeting. She stated that it was in conjunction with the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and that it would be a stop - gap initiative until the National Assembly officially passes a law on whistle-blowing.

Nevertheless, in order to see to the success of the policy, the government is to put in place a website, provide a phone number and an email address for people while anonymity and protection of whistle-blowers will be encouraged.
