Nigerian boy's classmates surprise him by donating money to fly his mother to America for his graduation

Mike Tertsea, a Nigerian boy got the most amazing surprise of his life during his graduation as his classmates at John Carroll School in Bel Air donated $1,763 to fly his mom in from Benue State, Nigeria to attend his graduation from highschool.

After 4-years of being apart, Felicia Ikpum, his 56-year old mom could barely recognise her son when she got picked up from the airport last Friday, May 20th.

Mike, who plays basketball at John Carroll and plans to further his education at the University of Rhode Island, was surprised when he learnt on Wednesday that the entire senior class, including faculty members, had contributed towards making sure his mom was in attendance for his graduation.

Toward the end of the school’s annual ceremony and Mass, the principal of the school Madelyn Ball told the friends and relatives who were gathered in the gym that one student had asked, "Is Mike's mum coming for graduation?"

Mike and his mother Felicia received a standing ovation as they were asked to come up on the stage during the graduation ceremony. They thanked the entire senior class for bringing them together after 4-years. Some of his classmates were teary-eyed as Mike and his mother made their way to the stage.

Mike said he is an only child and his mother is his only immediate relative, adding that he would like to pursue a career in economics or business management.

Kitchen tips that will blow your mind

Let's learn some KITCHEN tips, your kitchen is the most important room in your home. A lot comes out from there, so let's learn some few tricks. Works wonders.

1. If you happen to over-salt a pot of soup, just drop in a peeled potato. The potato will absorb the excess salt.

2. When boiling eggs, add a pinch of salt to keep the shells from cracking.

3. Never put citrus fruits(Oranges,Lemons, limes, etc) or tomatoes in the fridge. The low temperatures degrade the aroma and flavor of these fruits.(That's why our tomatoes don't last in the fridge)

4. To clean iron cookl-ware, don’t use detergents. Just scrub them with salt and a clean, dry paper towel.

5. When storing empty airtight containers, throw in a pinch of salt to keep them from getting stinky.

6. If you are making gravy(stew) and accidentally burn it, just pour it into a clean pan and continue cooking it. Add sugar a little at a time, tasting as you go to avoid 'over-sugaring'it. The sugar will cancel out the burned taste.

7. Burned a pot of rice? Just place a piece of white bread on top of the rice for 5-10 minutes to draw out the burned flavour. Be careful not to scrape the burned pieces off of the bottom of the pan when serving the rice.

8. Before you chop fresh red peppers, rub a little vegetable oil into your hands and your skin won't absorb the spiciness.

9. If you aren’t sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it’s past the fresh stage.

10. To banish ants from the kitchen, find out where they are coming in and cover the hole with petroleum jelly(Vaseline). Ants won’t trek through the jelly. If they are coming under a door, draw a line on the floor with chalk. The little bugs also won’t cross a line of chalk.

11. Don’t store your bananas in a bunch or in a fruit bowl with other fruits. Separate your bananas and place each in a different location. Bananas release gases which cause fruits (including other bananas) to ripen quickly. Separating them will keep them fresh longer.

12. To keep potatoes from budding in the bag, put an apple in with them.

13. If you manage to have some leftover wine, cocktail drinks at the end of the evening, freeze it in ice cube trays for easy addition to sauces (white wine works wonders in sauces, i don't joke with them) in the future.
14. After boiling pasta or potatoes, cool the water and use it to water your house plants. The water contains nutrients that your plants will love.

15. When defrosting meat from the freezer, pour some vinegar over it. Not only does it tenderize the meat; it will also bring down the freezing temperature of the meat and cause it to thaw quicker. # Note: every woman should have vinegar
in her kitchen.

16. Do you cry while peeling off onions, then try this. After peeling off your onions, refrigerate the onions for atleast 5minutes, then dice it. You will be glad you did.

17. For aluminium pans that are looking dull, just boil some apple peels in them. This will brighten up the aluminum and make your house smell yummy.

18. If your salt is becoming lumpy, put a few grains of rice in with it to absorb excess moisture.

19. Always keep an aloe vera plant in your
kitchen. It’s invaluable when you scrape your arm or burn your finger. Just break off a leaf and rub the gel from the inside on the injury.

20. When making a soup, sauce, that ends up too fatty or greasy, drop in an ice cube. The ice will attract the fat, which you can then scoop out. This works wonders

21. To reuse cooking oil without tasting whatever was cooked in the oil previously, cook a 1/4″ piece of ginger in the oil. It will remove any remaining flavors and odors.

22. If your milk always goes bad before you can finish it, try adding a pinch of salt to the carton when you first open it. It will stay fresh days longer.

23. If two drinking glasses become stuck together after stacking, it’s not impossible to unstuck them. Just put ice in the inner glass and dunk the outer glass in warm water. The warm glass will expand and the cold glass will contract, making the glasses separate easily.

Best way to transition to natural hair

The trend now is keep natural hair. Most people do not want the breaking relaxed hair again, but prefer healthy looking natural hair, thereby making many
people do the big chop, cutting off their relaxed hair. Whereas what many people don’t know is that there is a stage before the big chop called TRANSITION.
Transitioning is a gradual process of going
natural. Transitioning to natural hair is a simple process of growing out your natural texture before cutting off the processed or damaged ends. When you transition, you coddle along your tresses,
both natural and damaged, growing out your hair until you are ready to cut the ends off. Transitioners enjoy the benefit of added length for styles, and avoiding
those awkward growth stages that can frustrate many big choppers. Transitioning is the way to go if you don’t want to sacrifice your hair length and go natural
all at once. There are ways you can do your transition without the big chop and that is what we are looking at today.
Stop using chemical relaxer and all forms of chemical treatment: This includes texturizers, keratin treatments, and permanent hair dyes. All of these products alter the structure of your hair and will
prolong the transitioning process even further. They can also add extra fragility to your hair which is something you don’t need.
Good trim: This means you need to get rid of all those dead, thin and split ends. The longer you transition, the more brittle they will become so you might as well let them go now because they will break anyway.
Avoid heat: You want to avoid heat usage (flat irons & hot combs) because your hair is already in a fragile state and because if you encounter heat damage this could also potentially permanently straighten your hair, which is what you are trying to avoid.
Protect your edges: Avoid transitioning styles that put too much tension on your temples and the nape of your neck. The hair there is usually finer, thinner and
more delicate. Strengthen your hair with protein treatments and frequent deep conditioning: Where your relaxed hair meets your natural roots there is going to be some weakness in this area due to the texture differences. This is pretty much unavoidable, but what you can do is keep your hair in tip top shape by deep conditioning with every wash that you do, and doing protein treatments every 6 to 8 weeks.
Wear low manipulation or protective styles: A low manipulation style, is simply a style that does not require daily styling and maintenance, hence less strain on you hair. A good example of a low manipulation style would be a roller set, twist out, or braid out. Being that your texture is not going to be consistent while you are transitioning you will probably like the results of roller sets better or combing twists with rollers on the end (this way the ends of your hair will look nice and curly). protective style, is a style in which the ends of your hair protected by being tucked away and the style doesn’t require daily maintenance other than moisturizing. Good examples of protective styles include buns, box braid extensions, or even wigs.
Trim: How long the transitioning process will take will depend on the current length of your hair, if your hair is shoulder length or longer and the majority of your hair is relaxed it could take up to a year or more before your natural hair reaches a length that you are okay with. You don’t have to rush into a big chop, that’s the beauty of this method, but you must have patience.
Eat a balanced diet: What you eat also applies to hair growth. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, take vitamins and mineral supplements. Oh and garlic too it helps.
